BS 8555 STEMS
Steps to Environmental Management Systems
BS 8555 was established in 2003 with the aim to help breakdown an environmental management system into manageable sections (phases).
It allows organisations to implement parts of an EMS or put an EMS in place in stages inline with a standard that can be certified at any phase.
This scheme implements the guidance of British Standard BS 8555:2003 "Guidance to the phased implementation of an environmental management system including the use of environmental performance evaluation".
BS 8555 describes how to implement a generic EMS and can be used as a route towards ISO 14001 and EMAS.
The process of installing a formal EMS is broken down into five phases with a sixth phase that allows organisations to develop a system with the possibility of seeking recognition against the internationally accepted EMS standard ISO 14001 or registering under EMAS.
