NHSS 18 is the latest bespoke management system for landscaping and the environment (including ecology) contractors. The scheme is particularly concerned with the development of training and competency of operatives and their supervisors and the identification of best practice, including health & safety requirements.

The scope of the scheme covers

all landscape, environmental and ecology processes undertaken from initial assessment, design, planning and implementation as well as asset management and long-term maintenance.

IS IT COMPULSORY?

YES, if you are actually working on the highways as identified below:

National Highway sector schemes are mandatory for highway agency contracts. It will be a contractual requirement for organisations engaged by the Highways Agency in England, Transport Wales, Transport Scotland and Roads Service Northern Ireland to work on their highway estates including any sub-contractors they may use.

DO I NEED TO IMPLEMENT ISO 9001?

YES (although companies with a staff of 5 or less may qualify under the mini-micro enterprises route, which provides for assessment by the Scheme Administrator BALI.

NHSS18 is a scheme that has been developed to interpret ISO 9001 as it applies to a particular highway activity/industry. The scope of your ISO 9001 registration should cover the activities in which your organisation is involved.

DO I NEED TO GET CERTIFICATED

YES (unless micro/mini enterprise route applies)

There are UKAS (Government approved) certification bodies that will assess your systems and if they comply they will issue a certificate certifying that the holder operates a quality management system complying with ISO 9001 and NHSS 18. We can assist you on the certification process once we are confident your systems will pass a 3rd party inspection.
